The Parents and Family Lineage of John Douglas Duder (Douglas Walton)

Douglas Walton aka John Douglas Duder.

Douglas Walton, or John Douglas Duder to be exact, was born to British clergyman George Herbert Duder and Canadian Ethel Edna May Blackwell.  George Herbert Duder was born on February 15, 1871 in Taunton, Somerset, England.  Ethel Edna May Blackwell was born on 1885 in Middlesex, Ontario, Canada.

George Herbert Duder traveled around the UK and Canada for most of his life.  He studied at St. Augustine's College, in Canterbury, Kent, England.  He was ordained in 1898 and was stationed at the town of Qu'Appelle in Saskatchewan, Canada.  There in this province was where he married to Ethel Edna May Blackwell on October 28, 1907 in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan.  A few other sources stated that the two married in 1896, but I don't know the specifics--I just went for the October 28, 1907 date because it was part of an actual record in Ancestry.com.  The two went back and forth between Canada and England.  Less than two years later, John Douglas Duder was born in Woodstock (Oxford County), Ontario, Canada.

The family went back to England in 1911.  George Herbert Duder went first.  Ethel May Blackwell, her 1-year old son John Douglas Duder, and her sister Lilian Blackwell came together afterwards.  They resided in Gorkley, Sydney, Gloucestershire.  George had served in World War I in 1914 at the age of 43.  He was a member of the 2nd Battalion (Sportsman) Royal Fusiliers with a Short Service Enlistment.

After his service, he went around various places in the UK, the Caribbeans, and the Americas.  Because of his worldly travels for missionary work, it is likely that he spent little time with his family.  In fact by 1928, his address in the UK resided in Watford.  In that same year, John Douglas Duder, his mother Ethel May Blackwell, and his aunt Lilian Blackwell lived together in the same household in Bristol, about 122 miles away from Watford.  It is not known how long they have lived separately, but if that is the case, it is likely that Douglas Duder was primarily raised by his mother and aunt.

On January 2, 1935, George Herbert Duder died in Chichester, Sussex, England.

Ethel Edna May Blackwell, along with her sister Lilian, went back to Canada on July 1930 where they stayed with their sister Mrs. Robert Bickcoton in Woodstock, Ontario (the duration is not known).  Her date of death is unknown, but most likely some time after 1937 as she visited her son Douglas Duder in Hollywood in around January of that year.  She died in London County, Ontario, Canada and was buried in Woodland Cemetery.
